National Weather Center

Located on the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman, Oklahoma, the National Weather Center houses a unique confederation of the University of Oklahoma, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and state organizations working together in partnership to improve understanding of events occurring in Earth's atmosphere over a wide range of time and space scales. The National Weather Center houses over 500 people, including research scientists, operational meteorologists and climatologists, engineers, technicians, support staff and graduate and undergraduate students.

Tours of the National Weather Center are available weekdays for the public and larger groups, but advanced reservations are required. Visit the National Weather Center website to view the tour calendar and register for an open, available tour.

The first floor of the National Weather Center is open to the public during normal business hours. First floor features include: Science on a Sphere, which is a global display system that uses computers and video projectors to display planetary data on a giant animated globe; the Weather Wall; props from the movie “Twister” and the Flying Cow Cafe (open 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday).

Each fall, the National Weather Center hosts a free, open house event called the National Weather Festival, which highlights the many weather-related organizations and activities in central Oklahoma. Attractions at the National Weather Festival include hourly balloon launches with local broadcast meteorologists, emergency response vehicle displays, drone demonstrations and children's activities.
