Long Exposure: A Century of Pictorialism

at Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art

The Long Exposure exhibit at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art traces the international photographic movement known as “pictorialism.” The fine art, which adopts painterly techniques and subjects associated with painting, emerged late in the 19th century in Europe and quickly spread to the United States. While the movement waned in the 1910s, this exhibit demonstrates pictorialism’s influence on photographic history through an investigation of its adoption by early proponents of art photography, amateurs, Hollywood portraitists and photographers of the American West. A form of pictorialism continues today with contemporary artists continuing to manipulate and distort photographic images to create new art.
